REVIEW: INSTINCT

Wangaratta Chronicle - North East Regional Extra - - Front Page - with KYLIE WILSON

SHOW: Instinct CHANNEL: WIN TIME: Wednesday, 8.30pm

I HAVE long been a fan of the work of actor Alan Cumming.

The Scottish born actor first piqued my interest as the unpleasant but compelling character Sean in the 1990s romantic drama Circle of Friends, and also made memorable appearances in two of my favourite films from my younger days, Romy and Michele's High School Reunion and Josie and the Pussycats, among his multitudes of other film, television and theatre roles..

I am also a big fan of the vulnerability and anger of his characterisation of The Emcee, which he has played in several revivals of the classic musical Cabaret.

He will also be familiar to many for his recurring character in The Good Wife, Eli Gold.

If you – like me – are a fan of Alan's, you should enjoy his latest role as former CIA operative turned academic Doctor Dylan Reinhart in the new series Instinct.

He stars alongside Serbian-Australian actress Bojana Novakovic, who plays NYPD detective Lizzie Needham – the two teaming up when murders mirroring acts in Reinhart's bestselling books begin making headlines.

Dr Reinhart begins to feel the lure of catching criminals once more, but his husband becomes concerned that he will once again be sucked into a dangerous lifestyle and break promises the couple made to each other.

While it has many similarities to a range of other mismatched-partner police procedurals, including the likes of Castle, the talent, and the prickly but cheeky chemistry between the two leads elevates the material, and means it's well worth a watch.

VERSATILE: Veteran actor Alan Cumming makes a return to the small screen in Instinct.
