WINE TALK

Wangaratta Chronicle - North East Regional Extra - - FRONT PAGE - with ANITA

SOME people really seem to like going clothes shopping with friends and making an occasion out it, but for me, it’s something I much prefer doing on my own. I don’t have the patience to look at things I’m not interested in, I don’t like being asked how long I’m going to be, and I certainly don’t need help making a decision. The freedom to browse, try whatever I like and take my time is exactly what makes the whole experience a pleasure and it’s an indulgent escape from someone else’s deadlines. It’s a little the same with wine tasting sometimes I’m not in a rush to move on and would rather pick and choose from a range and really stop to enjoy it. So it’s a bonus to sample at Rutherglen Estates where the Aboriginal Exhibitions Gallery at the cellar door offers an amazing collection of art to ponder while you taste. While there are wonderful special occasion choices here, it’s also great to get your hands on a good value red like the 2016 Red. It’s a blend of mostly Shiraz with a little Durif and has an inviting aroma of rich berry fruit, warm oak and pepper spice. It’s full flavoured with generous plum and berry fruit but also nicely balanced, making it rest easy in the mouth with a little chocolatey smoothness. Try it with beef roast, barbecue or pizza. It’s a crowd pleaser which stylishly nails the smart casual brief. Visit the cellar door in Rutherglen or go to www.rutherglenestates.com.au
