Our youngest councillor a positive choice

Wangaratta Chronicle - - News -

CONGRATULATIONS to Ashlee Fitzpatrick for becoming the Rural City of Wangaratta’s youngest ever councillor.

Although it came after the sad and tragic loss of the highly respected and much-loved Cr Ruth Amery, council business stops for no man, or woman, and we would hope that Ms Fitzpatrick’s appointment would have met with Mrs Amery’s approval, at least for maintaining a woman’s presence on council.

While it’s important to have a balanced representation of the electorate on council it is more important that those elected are there for the right reasons and have the capabilities and skills to do the job.

Even if a person is the best educated, most experienced person on any committee, if their motivation is for the betterment of themselves rather than the people they represent, then they are not the best choice for the job.

For too many years councils were dominated by mainly men who could afford the time, while women and youth rarely stepped forward to nominate let alone prove successful in an election campaign.

Ms Fitzpatrick may be young but her already impressive resume for taking on various representation roles indicates she is made of the right stuff.

With the support of her fellow councillors our youngest councillor should benefit immensely and in term that will flow back to council and the community in spades.

Let’s hope soon-to-be Cr Fitzpatrick’s selection and future performance encourages others ‘less likely’ to stand for office to step forward at future council elections.
