Wangaratta venue overlooked

Rural City of Wangaratta manager of arts, culture and events, Penny Hargrave, said council wasn’t expecting another pre-season match in 2019 after hosting this year’s event.

“There are only a certain number of games that the AFL bring out to the country regions,” she said.

“They try to be equal in sharing those

matches around the different regions.”

Hargrave said the process for applying for the AFL games had changed in recent times but added council was keen to see elite footballers return to Wangaratta for 2020.

“Before the 2018 game, applying to host games was through a tender process but to get the 2018 game it was through invitation,” she said.

“What the process for 2020 is we don’t know and the AFL will probably look at that after the 2019 competition is done.

“We’d love to have the AFL games back in 2020 and we should know what the process is around August next year.”
