Easy composting tips

MINDARIE Regional Council will hold a free workshop on improving Perth’s sandy soils this Saturday.

People participating in the May 13 workshop at the Tamala Park education centre can learn ways to improve soils that lack nutrients without spending lots of money or effort.

Waste education officer Peg Davies said it was the right time for planting and looking forward to winter vegetables and flowers.

“However, this can be costly when we need to add lots of fertiliser and be worried about water and bugs,” she said.

“We throw away so much organic material – it is easy to learn how to process this into beautiful compost for a garden space.

“While our councils process most of our general-waste bin into useful soil conditioner, it is always beneficial to us if we can use it at home before it goes near a bin.”

The free workshop will show ways to process organic food and garden waste, plus create a small wicking bed that can reduce water consumption in the garden.
