GOVERNMENT TRIPLES FUNDING FOR PROJECT
CONSTRUCTION of the long-awaited Ocean Reef Marina is expected to start in 2020 after the State Government tripled its election commitment to provide $40 million towards the project.
Premier Mark McGowan and Lands Minister Rita Saffioti joined Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard at Ocean Reef Boat Harbour on Sunday morning to announce the government would commit $120 million over the life of the project.
This includes $35 million to be allocated in the 2017-18 State Budget.
This funding will enable all planning requirements and environmental reviews to be finalised and allow for forward works to start. Mr Pickard said the announcement was the culmination of more than 10 years of hard work from the City.
“For over a decade, the City has invested significant financial and human resources on the Ocean Reef Marina project, undertaking numerous studies, investigations, community consultation and the approvals required for its development,” he said.
“We welcome the commitment of the State Government, which will allow work on this world-class development to finally get under way.”
Mr McGowan said the project was “a rare opportunity to transform existing facilities into a world-class tourism and recreational facility”, providing a boost to jobs in the northern suburbs.
“It’s expected the new precinct will also have about 1000 new dwellings, ensuring the area will be full of activity once fully developed,” he said.
Ms Saffioti said the announcement showed “just how serious” the government was about “getting this project done”.
