NOM­I­NA­TIONS for the Fred Hol­lows Hu­man­ity Award close on Septem­ber 10, with stu­dents from Koondoola and Min­darie al­ready in the run­ning.

Mercy Col­lege stu­dent Derrick Goonting is one nom­i­nee for the award that recog­nises Year 6 stu­dents who demon­strate com­pas­sion, in­tegrity and kind­ness to­wards oth­ers.

His teacher Stephanie Gul­lotto nom­i­nated him for the re­spect and com­pas­sion he shows to those around him and his po­lite, kind-hearted and fun-lov­ing na­ture.

“Derrick has a great sense of hu­mour and al­ways greets peo­ple with a smile, mak­ing them feel wel­come and ac­cepted,” she said.

“He shows per­sis­tence and de­ter­mi­na­tion in all that he en­deav­ours and it has been a priv­i­lege watch­ing him grow into such a fine young man over the years.”

Pe­ter Moyes Angli­can Com­mu­nity School stu­dent Amelie White has been nom­i­nated for the con­cern she has shown for the wel­fare of oth­ers.

Amelie is de­scribed as a fair and grounded stu­dent who never takes sides and al­ways lets oth­ers be heard.

She idolises Jane Goodall and is pas­sion­ate about an­i­mal rights.

“Fred used to say the ba­sic at­tribute of mankind is to look af­ter each other,” Fred Hol­lows Foun­da­tion found­ing direc­tor Gabi Hol­lows said.

“He would be so proud to know the Fred Hol­lows Hu­man­ity Award is recog­nis­ing stu­dents who are demon­strat­ing this in their own lives.

“I urge peo­ple to nom­i­nate a Year 6 stu­dent they know who em­bod­ies the val­ues of com­pas­sion, in­tegrity and kind­ness.”

Par­ents, teach­ers, prin­ci­pals and mem­bers of the com­mu­nity can nom­i­nate a child they know who is mak­ing a dif­fer­ence at www.hol­­man­ityaward .

A pre­sen­ta­tion cer­e­mony in Perth later this year will recog­nise nom­i­nees and a WA ju­nior am­bas­sador will re­ceive $5000 to give to one of the foun­da­tion’s pro­grams to end avoid­able blind­ness.
