Seniors air concerns

Wanneroo Times - - Opinion - Laura Pond

PUBLIC transport, community facilities and health were the main issues raised by northern suburbs seniors at a recent Labor-run forum.

MLAs Emily Hamilton (Joondalup), Mark Folkard (Burns Beach) and Sabine Winton (Wanneroo) hosted Seniors and Ageing Minister Mick Murray at the Currambine Community Centre event.

Mr Murray told the more than 80 attendees that life did not stop once people reached 65 and encouraged them to stay active.

“It’s important as we age we go out in style,” he said.

“Governments have to facilitate what you want in your future.

“We are living a lot longer, generally. It is very important we understand the changing world.”

He said reaching a certain age should not keep people from activities and though it was his first time in the Currambine area, described it as a great place they could make better.

Clarkson resident John asked about forming community associations as he perceived a lack of groups in the area.

Mr Folkard agreed and said that over the next six months he would investigate what organisations were available locally and if needed set some up.

Mr Murray also suggested Department of Sport and Recreation club development officers could help.

Barbara, of Clarkson, raised concerns about the lack of bus services in her suburb.

“It’s very, very difficult for seniors to get out and about,” she said.

Kinross resident Beryl had similar concerns after the bus route 471 changed last year, which meant she and nearby residents had to walk 2km and travel across traffic to access the service.

Mr Folkard said afterwards the feedback on public transport was concerning.

“It is my view that we should be affording our seniors with mobility and independence,” he said.

“So, for that reason, I will be following up with those who spoke at the forum and (Transport) Minister (Rita) Saffioti to seek a greater understanding about the issue, and what we can do about it moving forward.”
