Mum’s the word in shave

KAYLA Pellegrini’s passion to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients such as her mother trumped her nervousness at losing her hair.

The Year 8 Ashdale Secondary College student had her head shaved in front of hundreds of her schoolmates to raise money for Leukaemia Foundation.

Kayla (13) took part in the 20th anniversary of the World’s Greatest Shave on March 14 in tribute to her mother Sally Pellegrini, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2016. She raised more than $4000. Kayla said although she was nervous before having her shoulder-length locks shaved off, she now embraced her new look.

“I wanted to make a difference in the lives of people going through cancer treatment, like what my mum went through. I will embrace my fresh new look but I will be wearing beanies when it’s cold,” she said.

“It’s really light but it feels weird and people say it suits me.”

Mrs Pellegrini’s cancer treatment included lumpectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and hormone therapy.

More than a year on from her diagnosis, the Landsdale resident said she now felt great, with her follow up mammogram in December 2017 all clear.

“I only lost some of my hair as I did the ‘Cold Cap Therapy’. It thinned out but is growing back now,” she said.

“I am in awe of Kayla; to do this off her own back and be so determined was an inspiration and it gives me enormous pride.”
