Outstanding contributors recognised

Wanneroo Weekender - - Australia Day 2017 -

A WANNEROO pioneer, teenage philanthropist and cancer support group have been given Australia Day honours by the City of Wanneroo.

Carmela Sinagra, Alicia Tavani (15) and Two Rocks Yanchep Assisted Cancer Travels (TRYACT) were recognised for their community contributions at the City’s citizenship ceremony.

Mrs Sinagra, a founding and proactive member of the Antonian Seniors’ Group for the past 25 years, received the award for an individual aged over 25 who has made an outstanding contribution to the community.

She “works tirelessly” for the group organising events and activities, and previously received pioneer status from the City.

Wanneroo teenager Alicia won the Charles Searson youth award for her fundraising and volunteering efforts.

“Breaking down the barriers of bullying and self-esteem, she has proven that with the right attitude and dedication, it is entirely possible to achieve your wildest dreams,” a City statement said.

“From seriously ill children to cleaning up Australia and educating teens on the impacts of bullying, Alicia has shown that with a little hard work, every single person has the opportunity to help make their community a safer, happier place to live, work and play.”

The community group award was given to TRYACT, which provides free transport from Yanchep and Two Rocks to various Perth hospitals for people undergoing cancer treatments.

Sue Dash and Jo Holding helped establish the group in 2013 that was praised for “alleviating at least some of the financial and logistical stress away from their clients”.

“This organisation’s outstanding efforts are so inspiring that a number of former clients have gone on to become volunteer drivers.” Youth award winner Alicia Tavani.
