Wanneroo Weekender - - News - Tyler Brown

THE contract for an upgrade of Penistone Park in Greenwood has been awarded.

Joondalup councillors at last month’s meeting voted unanimously to award the tender to McCorkell Constructions WA for $2.9 million.

The tender was advertised from November 19 to December 13. Six submissions were received.

The redevelopment will include a community sporting facility, two softball pitches, two tennis courts and hit-up wall, softball and cricket nets, three-on-three basketball and netball court, and floodlighting, as well as a playground, barbecue and picnic shelter.

The central access road will also be removed to improve safety and a new carpark will be built.

Joondalup Mayor Troy Penistone Park, Greenwood is set for an upgrade.

Pickard said the City had worked with McCorkell Constructions WA on other projects including the Warwick Hockey Centre and Bramston Park community sporting facility in Burns Beach.

He said it was a “significant win” for the community with the park being home to a number of groups including Penistone Playgroup, WarwickGreenwood cricket, junior cricket and junior football clubs, and Wanneroo Lacrosse, Greenwood Little Athletics and Perth Outlaws Softball clubs.

“This project will address the current challenges of the site and the facility in relation to storage, drainage, car parking, toilets and sporting infrastructure,” he said.

Work is expected to begin in April and be finished by the end of February next year.

Cr John Chester said at the meeting the project had “been in the pipeline since 2013” and he was “very much looking forward to the building getting under way”.

The project received $550,000 funding through the Department of Sport and Recreation’s Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund.
