Culture shock for Cocos kids

Wanneroo Weekender - - News -

NOT many students can say they have travelled 6000km for a school excursion.

But that is what these Year 10 students from Cocos Islands District High School did last month.

The 11 students visited ECU’s Joondalup campus to take part in work experience and visit the schools they would be attending next year.

“Our students complete years 11 and 12 on the mainland, so this was a good opportunity for them to come to Perth and get accustomed to it,” deputy principal Lauren Tyler said.

“We came to ECU because we are extremely keen to see more of our students accessing tertiary education and bringing the skills back to the island if they choose to return.”

Student Denzel Whichello said the trip had been enjoyable.

“It’s been fun but it’s very different here than in Cocos,” he said.

“The university is bigger than our whole town on Cocos.”
