BOXING BROTHERS WIN BIG IN ADELAIDE

MOST brothers fight, but for these two from Tapping, sparring gives them a competitive edge.

Three years training with Wanneroo Amateur Boxing Club helped Solomon (15) and Seth (12) Price win gold medals at the U19 Australian Boxing Championships in Adelaide this month.

Solomon, who is in Year 11 at Wanneroo Secondary College, won the junior national champion title, having won silver at last year’s championships in Queensland.

The teenager said he loved the competitive nature of the sport and trained at the Wanneroo club three times a week.

“I have learnt a lot of discipline,” he said.

His younger brother, who is in Year 8 at Joseph Banks Secondary College, said he was feeling good after winning the national schoolboy title.

“When you box, you feel a lot more confident after a few wins; I definitely do,” he said. “It’s a really good sport to get into at a young age.

“It’s really good for self-control in general.”

Seth said facing boxers of different ages and weights helped develop that self-control, as older boxers focus on defence as they “go easy” on their younger opponents, who in turn develop self-confidence.

Solomon trains with the adults at the gym so the brothers don’t usually box each other.

“We don’t get to spar when we are at the gym, but when we are at home… I’m his punching bag,” Seth said. “There’s a lot of competition between us.”

Seth said he did kickboxing before they joined the boxing club three years ago, and he enjoyed basketball and riding dirt bikes as well.

Coach Neil Gledhill said members of the club had won three gold and two silver medals in the past five years.

He said the club had 13 boys competing in WA events, making it the highest number registered in WA.
