WA GOVERNOR Kerry Sanderson will open the WA Cancer Council’s 10th Joondalup Wanneroo Relay for Life at Arena Joondalup this Saturday at noon.

More than 100 teams will take part in the 24-hour event, which is the culmination of months of fundraising.

Since the first Joondalup Wanneroo Relay for Life in 2008, more than $2.7 million has been raised to help the Cancer Council with its research and support programs.

And since 2008, when two young cancer survivors Robi Boscarino and Amelia Hewison met for the first time, the Relay for Life has held a special place in their hearts.

Robi was undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma and Amelia was in remission from Wilms tumour.

In 2008 Robi and Amelia walked the Survivors Lap of Honour together, and as the youngest cancer survivors they were invited to cut the celebratory survivors cake together. In a few weeks from now the young couple will be cutting another celebratory cake together – their wedding cake.

Robi and Amelia have made Relay for Life an annual priority, with fundraising, walking the Survivors Lap of Honour together, supporting other survivors and taking part in the moving Survivors Candlelight Ceremony.

Amelia is the Cancer Council’s Lone Piper, and each year following the Candlelight Ceremony she plays a beautiful bagpipes rendition of Amazing Grace.

Committee spokeswoman Donna Ironmonger congratulated the couple.

Amelia Hewison and Robi Boscarino, who met at the 2008 Relay for Life, will be getting married in a few weeks.
