THE Quinns Districts Netball Club is celebrating its 40th anniversary this weekend.

President Michelle Martin said it started in 1978 as the Quinns Rocks Primary School Netball Club with junior teams training on one court at the school and parents coaching and umpiring.

“The club name was changed to Quinns Districts Netball Club after primary school students had moved to high school and wanted to continue to play netball and as new schools began expanding in the area,” she said.

The club played at Kingsway from 1978 to 1996 under the Wanneroo association, then came under the Joondalup Netball Association umbrella when that was founded in 1997.

“This year each registered player was presented with a complimentary commemorative training shirt to celebrate 40 years,” Ms Martin said.

“Our club is built upon a culture of inclusion and community spirit and we pride ourselves on being a familybased club.”

The Mindarie resident said the club now had 23 teams with players aged six up to those in their 30s, as well as 14 committee members.

“Quinns Districts Netball Club is going from strength to strength and is now one of the largest clubs at the Joondalup Netball Association,” she said.

Ms Martin said her son was one of three boys playing at the Gumblossom courts, and said the club would welcome more.

“It’s so important nowadays for boys and girls to get outdoors,” she said.

Life member Carol Roberts joined in 1989 as a parent coach when her daughter was in Year 1 and the club had six or seven teams at the time.

The club will mark the 40th anniversary at Mindarie on Sunday.
