Life­savers take on the world

TRIGG and Sor­rento surf life­savers will take on the best in the world at the Life Sav­ing World Cham­pi­onships.

Jake Smith, from Trigg Is­land Surf Life Sav­ing Club and Royal Life Sav­ing So­ci­ety WA, and Sor­rento surf club’s Jack­son Sy­monds have been se­lected in the 12-per­son Aus­tralian team to com­pete in Ade­laide in De­cem­ber.

They are the only two West Aus­tralians se­lected in the team, which in­cludes 2018 Iron­man Se­ries Cham­pion Matt Bevilac­qua and 2017 cham­pion Har­riet Brown.

Smith will be mak­ing his world cham­pi­onships de­but as he com­petes in the pool res­cue cat­e­gory, while four-time cham­pi­onships gold medal­list Sy­monds will hit the sand for the beach sprints.

Coach Kurt Wil­son said he looked for­ward to work­ing with the team in the lead-up to the com­pe­ti­tion.

“It has been a been a very tough se­lec­tion process with such depth and talent across the squad, which is a good prob­lem to have,” he said.

The team will com­pete in Ja­pan and Germany in the next few months and par­tic­i­pate in two team camps be­fore the cham­pi­onships start on De­cem­ber 2.
