PEOPLE are encouraged to register to host a garage sale during Australia’s biggest community sustainability event, which will take place on October 20 and 21.

Mayor Tracey Roberts is encouraging City of Wanneroo residents to ‘choose to re-use’ and be part of the annual Garage Sale Trail.

“According to The Australia Institute, 88 per cent of Australians have at least one cluttered room in their home,” she said.

“What better way of decluttering than hosting your own sale.”

Last year, organisers revealed the average garage sale sold nine shopping trolleys worth of items.

The latest findings from the Gumtree Second Hand Economy Report 2018 also showed the average Australian household had $4200 in unwanted items and 50 per cent admitted to throwing unwanted items away.

“Garage Sale Trail presents the perfect opportunity to not only reuse, but to realise the responsibility we have for the waste we generate,” Mrs Roberts said.
