Baw Baw Shire has undertaken a review of its section 86 hall and recreation committees across the municipality.

Council has 16 committees of management across the shire.

The section 86 committees of management have delegated authority from council to manage their respective facilities.

The public hall and recreation reserve committees of management include: Bellbird Park recreation reserve; Bellbird Park synthetic and grass fields; Buln Buln, Ellinbank, Western Park and Dowton Park recreation reserves; Athlone hall and recreation reserve; Crossover school site; Darnum Memorial Hall; Ellinbank public hall; Erica community facilities; Lardner hall and recreation reserve; Narracan public hall; Nilma North and Lillico Memorial Hall; and Tetoora Rd Community Centre.

Council recently agreed to disband the section 86 committee of management at Trafalgar. Council will now manage the Trafalgar recreation precinct.

Council undertook an internal audit review of its committees of management with a view to comparing the strengths and weaknesses of the committees compared to council managed facilities.

The report to council said volunteering and management through section 86 committees helped to create ownership at community facilities and helped to create a socially inclusive environment for user groups.

“When delegation us utilised correctly, red tape and processing time can be reduced.

“Volunteers help reduce the cost to council of management of these facilities,” the report said.

Cr Michael Leaney said the committees were very important across the shire.

He said he looked forward to the good work the committees would do in their communities.

Cr Mikaela Power said council relied on volunteers to do this work.

She said the committees were very important for council and the communities they represented.

“This was a very thorough process and what they have come up with is very good and allows these committees to get on with their delegation powers,” she said.

A 68-year-old Drouin man was recovering in Royal Melbourne Hospital last week after being struck by a car in Drouin on Tuesday morning.

Police said the collision occurred near the school crossing at Drouin Primary School in Princes Way at about 9.40am.

Police said the female driver was driving at speed along Princes Way when she saw the man allegedly step from the kerb and begin crossing the road.

The woman told police she could not avoid the collision.

Police said the male ended up under the vehicle. The man was treated at the scene and airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with multiple injuries.
