Under 16s fall short

-

Warragul and District suffered a heartbreaking loss in round three of under 16 Gippsland Cricket League, falling just five runs short in their pursuit of Leongatha and District’s 124.

The Wild Dogs bowlers were again on target, dismissing the visitor for a middling total on the final ball of the innings. Only late hitting from Josh Williams (42) and Billy Manicaro (28) helped Leongatha and District to 124.

Jai Serong (4/33) and Liam Quarrell (2/28) were both effective with the new ball, and were backed up by the change bowlers who kept it tight.

The Wild Dogs also struggled with the bat, and while Lachlan Jagoe (28) did his best to lift the scoring, his dismissal with the score on 102 ultimately left too much for the tail to do.

A strong partnership between Charlie Stern and Harrison Moore sparked life into the Warragul chase, but they were dismissed in quick succession to see the Wild Dogs fall just five runs short with just under four overs of their allotted overs up their sleeve.

The loss sees the Wild Dogs still searching for their first win, with Sale-Maffra and Central Gippsland running away at the top of the table.

Warragul and District’s next match will be against Traralgon and District at Yinnar on November 19.

The senior and under 18 teams will resume action on November 26.

Hot Shots back in action

Warragul and District women will continue their Gippsland Twenty/20 campaign on Sunday with a spot in the final still up for grabs.

The Hot Shots will play Leongatha and District and Sale-Maffra at Sale’s College ovals, with the final to be played at that venue in the afternoon.

Sale-Maffra have effectively already secured their place in the final, with three first round wins.

With CATS, Bairnsdale and Leongatha and District all having one win, Warragul and District will have to win both its matches to give itself any chance.
