Eco­nomic pro­file

A snap­shot of the shire’s eco­nomic pro­file in the an­nual re­port re­vealed the es­ti­mated gross out­put for busi­nesses in the shire for the 12 months to De­cem­ber 2016 was $3.9 bil­lion.

Within the shire there are 14,127 lo­cal jobs, 4814 lo­cal busi­nesses and 19,379 em­ployed res­i­dents.

Man­u­fac­tur­ing was the largest out­put sec­tor at $724.7 mil­lion (18 per cent) with con­struc­tion be­ing the sec­ond high­est at $556.5 mil­lion (14 per cent) and rental, hir­ing and real es­tate $450 mil­lion.

Agri­cul­ture, forestry and fish­ing is the fourth largest sec­tor at $433 mil­lion.

Health care and so­cial as­sis­tance was the largest em­ployer in the shire, em­ploy­ing 1714 peo­ple. Agri­cul­ture is the sec­ond largest em­ployer with 1683 peo­ple and then re­tail with 1648 peo­ple.

Town pop­u­la­tions based on the 2016 Cen­sus are War­ragul – 15,757; Drouin – 12,349; Trafal­gar – 3912; Long­warry – 2004; Yar­ragon – 1650.
