QUEENSLANDERS could have reassurance pets they bought had been properly looked after as the State Government’s new puppy farm laws started this month, Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Bill Byrne said.

Mr Byrne, who joined thousands of Queenslanders taking part in the RSPCA Million Paws Walk, said the new laws would start on May 26 and would apply to anyone giving away, supplying, selling or advertising dogs born on or after that date.

“Many Queenslanders are concerned about the welfare of dogs and puppies being sold and supplied in our state,” Mr Byrne said.

All new puppies will need to have a breeder identification number, known as a Supply Number. The supply number can then be used to find information about the breeder using the online Queensland Dog Breeder Register.
