Breeding bulls a passion
THE journey for Bunda Santa Gertrudis to breed quality santa gertrudis cattle began in 2008 with the purchase of classified females from the Rosgar, Gyranda, Raelands and Macaire studs.
While it has been a long road with many ups and downs, Nigel and Toni Sharpe and boys, Elih, 14, Murdoch, 6, and Quincy, 5, wouldn’t have it any other way.
Breeding bulls and being in the seedstock industry is a family affair.
“We do it because we love it,” Mr Sharpe said.
“We get great satisfaction from breeding animals that other producers both in the seedstock and commercial industries want.
“Over this time, we have invested heavily in leading genetics by purchasing bulls Cardona Organic for $24,000 and Canowindra Magic for $14,000 in 2015.”
As further investment in their genetics, in 2016 the Sharpe family purchased Glen Oaks Livingston at the Santa Central bull sale for $24,000.
“This year we have purchased Moongana Kruger at Springsure for $14,000,” he said.
While some people may consider this expensive, the Sharpe family consider it an investment in the santa gertrudis breed and the future.
The Bunda journey began with selling bulls at the Casino All Breeds Bull Sale and Northern Breeders Bull Sale but in 2015 moved to the Wandoan Santa Gertrudis Bull Sale.
Mr and Mrs Sharpe have focused on selling there solely since 2015 and therefore sell their best-quality bulls through this sale.
This year was their first foray into the show ring to try and get cattle out into the public eye.
“Whilst challenging, it was also very rewarding, with all five of the family being involved,” Mr Sharpe said.
Mrs Sharpe is responsible for the show team, Mr Sharpe is the truck driver and the boys parade and help when they can, whether it is brushing the cattle or helping with feeding through to competing in junior paraders and junior judging.
Results in the show ring were also quite pleasing for the family, with Bunda Minnie judged champion female at the 2017 Santa Gertrudis National Junior Show and grand champion bos indicus female at the Warwick and Goondiwindi Shows.
Bunda Mate was judged grand champion bos indicus bull at Warwick Show and reserve at Goondiwindi.
Bunda Monty was judged grand champion bos indicus bull at the Goondiwindi Show.
Bunda stud are offering eight bulls this year at the Wandoan Santa Gertrudis Bull Sale on September 25.
PROGENY UP FOR GRABS: Bunda Monty is being retained in the stud as a future sire.
