COTTON Australia has congratulated the Australian Parliament on passing the Northern Basin Review amendment and restoring bipartisan support for the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

The expiration of the parliamentary disallowance period means the NBR amendments are now a permanent part of the basin plan.

This is good news for communities in the northern Murray-Darling Basin, with water recovery being reduced by 70GL, and improving environmental outcomes.

In addition, a range of other ‘toolkit measures’ to boost environmental outcomes have been funded and will now be implemented.

Cotton Australia general manager Michael Murray said northern basin communities now had certainty.

“Cotton Australia welcomes this news as it puts to rest any doubt over the future of the MDBP and allows us all to get on with the business of implementing the plan in full and on time,” Mr Murray said.

“We must now focus on the content of the plan and implement it in a way that will maximise environmental outcomes by using the environmental water available.”
