RUGBY LEAGUE: A decision to take his school career outside of the Rose City has opened up a world of opportunity for a star Warwick athlete.

Footballer Brendan Hoffman heads to the Gold Coast this weekend for what could be the start of an illustrious sporting career.

Hoffman will attend Keebra Park State High School for Years 11 and 12, under a partial contract with the Wests Tigers NRL Club, which could lead to his selection in the team post-graduation. A rugby-league nursery school, Keebra Park has produced a number of NRL stars, including Brisbane Broncos winger Jordan Kahu.

“Keebra Park has had many students who have become players I admire, particularly Benji Marshall,” Hoffman said.

“I sent away a video compilation of me playing football at different levels then the main coach came up from the Gold Coast to watch one of my matches in Toowoomba.

“He said they usually give out scholarships after a few months but he liked my playing style and saw my swimming as a big positive and gave me the scholarship on the spot.

“I’d always wanted to go away to finish Years 11 and 12 and this was a fantastic opportunity to be able to take.

“Ultimately I hope the contract does open up the opportunity to play for the Tigers but any club could still pick you up.”

Hoffman has played for the Warwick and District Chargers representative teams for four successive seasons, and twice for the South West Mustangs at a junior level.

He also played most of his junior rugby league for Eastern Suburbs in Warwick.

A second rower who loves defending, Hoffman’s aim is to improve his football at the Gold Coast and enjoy it.

Like many young players, his ultimate dream is to play in the NRL.

“While I’m still at school I’m hoping to learn as much as I can and meet new people,” Hoffman said.

“I know I’ll enjoy my time there but I’ll still need to put as much effort in to maximise what I get out of it.

Rugby league is a school subject at Keebra Park, and Hoffman will have three classeseach week to complete a Certificate II in rugby league coaching.

He will have three gym sessions a week, one beach training session, and football training in addition to school work, as he aims to study sports psychology at university.

Hoffman has also excelled at swimming and athletics, as well as rugby league.

In the past two years, he has won gold and silver in state shotput and was fourth in the 2016 nationals.

“It will depend on my training schedule and how close the pool is but I certainly hope I can continue with swimming.”

SCHOLARSHIP: Brendan Hoffman is on a rugby league scholarship to Keebra Park State High School at the Gold Coast and has a partial contract with Wests Tigers.
