Killer quake rocks Iran and Iraq

MORE than 140 peo­ple were killed and hun­dreds in­jured by a 7.2 mag­ni­tude earth­quake yes­ter­day in Iraq near the bor­der with Iran, about 220km north­east of the Iraqi cap­i­tal, Bagh­dad. The quake struck at 9.18pm lo­cal time on Sun­day and res­cuers worked overnight to find dozens of peo­ple trapped under rub­ble in both coun­tries. At least 141 peo­ple were killed in Iran, ac­cord­ing to the coun­try’s disaster man­age­ment body. At least six peo­ple were killed in Iraq, ac­cord­ing to of­fi­cials. Elec­tric­ity and wa­ter were cut off in sev­eral Ira­nian and Iraqi cities.
