I’ve enjoyed many a New Zealand road trip fuelled by Jaffas, Buzz Bars and chocolate fish, so was keen to go straight to the source.
Sadly, the last packet of Pineapple Lumps rolled off the line at Cadbury’s Dunedin factory last week, with production of some of its most iconic goodies moving to Australia.
The silver-foiled lining is that tours will continue (including the famous chocolate fall, pictured), with Cadbury World planning a new site and expansion. The Jaffa Race is also ready to roll on July 20.
But there’s a new homegrown hero poised to step up: Otago Chocolate Company (OCHO).
The ethical craft chocolate maker was founded in 2013 by former journalist Liz Rowe, but after the closure of Cadbury’s Dunedin factory she decided to enlist some people power.
In just two days she raised $2 million through crowd-funding.
While soon to splash that cash on a flash new base on Dunedin’s waterfront, OCHO’s current cafe-fronted factory on Vogel Street delivers plenty of melting moments in the meantime.
