Toxic fire in Mel­bourne

FIRE­FIGHT­ERS yes­ter­day con­tained the perime­ter of a ware­house blaze that spewed toxic plumes over Mel­bourne’s west.

MFB deputy chief of­fi­cer Ken Brown said about 140 fire­fight­ers bat­tled the blaze, which erupted in the 100m by 200m Somerville Rd build­ing about 5am.

“This morn­ing, the fire was fully in­volved in the whole build­ing. We’ve man­aged to con­tain the perime­ter fire and we’ve got a fire burn­ing within the cen­tre. We’re now work­ing on a strat­egy to knock the fire down,” he said yes­ter­day.
