Memories of hotel gardens sought

ROCKINGHAM residents who remember the hotel gardens that used to be where the Rockingham hotel carpark now is are being encouraged to attend a forum at the end of April to share their memories.

The garden, built in the mid-1920s, used to be a favourite meeting spot for residents who enjoyed the park.

It included a lawn area and a pond that was home to black and white swans, cages of parrots and fountains up until the early 1960s, when it made way for carparking, according to museum curator Wendy Durant.

“We are calling on people to come along and tell us what they remember of the hotel gardens,” Ms Durant said.

“We would welcome photos that we can copy and return to people.”

“It’s part of bringing people’s memories to life and educating the public in the future about what was here in Rockingham, because we are losing it very quickly.”

Ms Durant said she was hoping people would be willing to be interviewed about their recollections of the park.

“The aim of the forum is to add to our history and our records, so that we know what went on back then. If we don’t collect these stories, they are gone,” she said.

Ms Durant said it was also important for younger generations to learn more about the City’s history.

The forum will be held at the museum on Saturday, April 29, starting at 2pm.
