THE City of Rockingham has announced the appointment of its new chief executive, Michael Parker.

After a four-month selection process, Mr Parker was chosen to replace outgoing chief executive Andrew Hammond after he resigned on November 20 last year.

Mr Parker has been chief executive of the Shire of Harvey for the past 15 years and prior to that was chief executive at Shire of Wagin.

Mayor Barry Sammels said it was a comprehensive selection process.

“The search for a suitable candidate has been a long and involved one, with many steps to be taken,” he said.

“But council is very confident we have found the ideal person for this very important role.”

A Recruitment Committee comprising Cr Sammels, Deputy Mayor Deb Hamblin, and councillors Chris Elliot and Joy Stewart were responsible for selecting a suitable candidate.

Lester Blades Executive Search was engaged to assist with the search.

The City received 67 applications from around Australia for the position.

Six candidates were interviewed by the Recruitment Committee.

At a special meeting on April 19, council authorised Cr Sammels to commence negotiations with the preferred candidate over contractual details and a remuneration package.

“The chief executive’s role is absolutely vital to the implementation of council’s vision for the City of Rockingham,” he said.

“We are delighted to have found a candidate of Michael’s calibre who has the experience and the enthusiasm to fill the requirements of this role.

“We are looking forward to his contribution to the City over coming years.”

Michael Parker has been chief executive of the Shire of Harvey and Shire of Wagin.
