Move may increase Sara’s term

-

BYRON BAY woman Sara Connor faces the prospect of having her four-year jail sentence for her role in killing a Bali police officer increased, after prosecutors yesterday revealed they would lodge an appeal.

But her boyfriend, British DJ David Taylor, who was jailed for six years, will not face an appeal.

Denpasar Prosecutions general crime chief Ketut Maha Agung yesterday said an appeal would be lodged to the High Court on grounds of leniency in a bid to have her serve up to eight years.

“Because the sentence is half of the prosecutor’s demand. It is less than two-thirds of the demand,” Mr Agung said.

Mr Agung said he was optimistic of success on appeal because “we have enough evidence”.

“Of course we are expecting the same sentence with our demand, eight years,” he said.

The danger now is that in addition to increasing Connor’s sentence, the High Court can also reinstate the more serious charge of murder.

Ketut Arsini, the police officer’s widow, said she was happy about the appeal.

She had been devastated at the verdicts handed down earlier this week.

“Basically, I let the prosecutor decide whatever is the best. I don’t understand about the law. I believe in the prosecutor and the court to decide,” Ms Arsini said.

“If I am asked whether I am happy or not, of course I am happy. But I have to let them decide. I don’t understand about law.”
