Coast girls on trial for Cyclones
GOLD Coast will make the historic step of fielding teams in the inaugural under-15 and under-17 girls sevens Queensland State Championships.
The sides will compete under the Coast’s Cyclones representative banner and will vie for silverware against Darling Downs, Central Queensland, Sunshine Coast and two Brisbane outfits.
The championships are in Logan on September 20 and 21.
Gold Coast District Rugby Union representative Joe McIvor said the sport had boomed on the back of time in the spotlight at the Rio Olympics and, more recently, the emergence of the Women’s University Sevens Series.
“At the moment on the Gold Coast we have got a number of teams from under-12s through to opens playing sevens … it’s increasing constantly,” McIvor said.
The Cyclones are carrying extended squads of 18 players in under-15s and 14 in under-17s but are expected to trim those numbers to final groups of 12 by next Thursday.
“By putting a team in we’re hoping we are successful in the inaugural under-15s and under-17s girls Cyclones but also promote and increase the popularity of women’s sevens, especially on the Gold Coast,” McIvor said.
