Cyclist ‘punched’ by Hedges Ave runner
A GOLD Coast cyclist has captured a runner lunging at him on a morning ride in what he described as a violent attack, where he was allegedly “charged at” and “punched”.
Nick Hortovanyi took to the ‘Gold Coast Cycling Combined’ Facebook page to warn others about the man’s behaviour.
“Today I had this guy charge me and punch me quite hard when I was cycling along Hedges Av this morning,” he said. “It’s not the first time”.
Police confirmed the alleged assault occurred about 6am near the intersection of Hedges Ave and Arthur St.
A spokesman said officers received reports a male jogger ran at a cyclist and punched him in the left arm, before running off.
Mr Hortovanyi recorded the incident on his GoPro as he cycled along the road.
“(The man) will run towards you, so you have to stop the bike, then he punches you in the guts,” his friend Matt Sully said.
“He’s no shrinking violet, I wouldn’t want to be punched by him.”
Mr Sully said he had been told that last week the man had allegedly ripped a cyclist off his bike, which led to a punch up.
Several cyclists commenting on the online cycling forum posted about having similar encounters with the mystery runner.
Mr Hortovanyi declined to speak about the incident, telling the Bulletin he wanted it to be handled by the proper authorities.
It comes just two weeks after footage of a motorist beeping and yelling at cyclists riding three-deep across the same Broadbeach street emerged.
HE’S NO SHRINKING VIOLET, I WOULDN’T WANT TO BE PUNCHED BY HIM.
Hedges Ave is a popular area for runners, walkers, cyclists and motorists looking to “rat-run” around the Gold Coast Hwy.
The speed limit was lowered to 30km/h in 2015, and police regularly patrol the area.
Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Policelink on 131 444.
