Dora legs up our explorer
MEET the Bond University graduate back on the Gold Coast thanks to a globetrotting Latino teen called Dora.
Matthew Beecher, from Goulburn, NSW, has worked on commercials, in television and on blockbuster films everywhere from London and Montreal to Sydney, Namibia, South Africa, China and most recently Hawaii, since he graduated from Bond in 2007 with a degree in film and television production.
“I’ve worked on some clunkers and I’ve worked on some great movies, but I’ve never had a bad time on any of them,” said Beecher, who specialises in media and data management and also works in visual effects co-ordination.
After working on epic productions including Mad Max:
Fury Road, the Jason Bourne feature and leading director Steven Spielberg’s Ready
Player One, Beecher returned to the Coast to join the crew of James Bobin’s live-action
Dora The Explorer movie, while his impressive list of film credits includes the upcoming Triple Frontier (mocap-previs lead artist: proxi), Pacific Rim: Uprising
(assistant visual effects co-ordinator),
Ready Player One (assistant visual effects co-ordinator), Jason Bourne (assistant vfx co-ordinator) and Gods of
Egypt (data co-ordinator), Beecher said his journey into the industry was an unlikely one.
“In the area I grew up, it was never a viable career. It wasn’t on the cards,” he said.
That all changed when opportunity knocked as a host of US productions including the
Matrix series, Moulin Rouge and two Star Wars prequels filmed in Sydney.
“Suddenly there was a feature film presence in Australia,” Beecher said.
“It became, ‘Maybe there is something I can contribute here. I’ve got this background in photography, and there’s a massive correlation between that and cinematography’.
“I figured if I learn enough about the industry, I’ll find something I can do.”
After working on commercials and in TV, Beecher landed a job as digital media assets manager on George Miller’s Oscar-winning 2015 action drama Mad Max: Fury Road.
He said the Australian film industry was well placed for a bright future.
“The kid in me would always like to work on SpiderMan or a Star Wars film,” he said. “If I had my dream, I’d just love to work on an Aussie film that’s full of character, something endearing.”
IF I HAD MY DREAM, I’D JUST LOVE TO WORK ON AN AUSSIE FILM THAT’S FULL OF CHARACTER
