PEO­PLE who re­ward them­selves with a sneaky treat or a glass of wine af­ter work can re­lax and feel a lit­tle less guilty.

A study has found early evening is when we burn the most kilo­joules and our bod­ies can best cope with small treats.

For those who keep a reg­u­lar sched­ule, their metabolic rate is high­est from late af­ter­noon on­ward and they burn off an ex­tra 21 kilo­joules an hour, or about half a gram of fat.

Re­searchers also found peo­ple burned fewest kilo­joules be­tween 4am and 6am. The find­ings were pub­lished in the jour­nal Cur­rent Bi­ol­ogy,
