QUICK FIT FIX
Psychologist, personal trainer and author of Head First, Health Fast, Leanne Hall shares her smart ways to help you reach your wellness goals. WHAT DOES EXERCISE MEAN TO YOU?
For me, exercise is about more than just keeping fit and strong. It’s about stress and mood management – and it’s my favourite social outlet. I train with a bunch of women and we build each other up. My husband trains with me too and the kids come for a run or bike ride.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE EXERCISE?
Having recently entered the world of long- distance running and triathlons, I love to run, ride and swim. I also enjoy some solo time at the gym, headphones in, strength training with my favourite playlist. I love finishing with a spa… bliss!
YOU TALK ABOUT THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION – CAN YOU EXPLAIN THIS?
There is no disputing the fact that the mind and body are connected. The vagus nerve connects the base of the brain directly with the stomach. So when we are anxious or depressed, our gut is directly affected. The neurotransmitters released when we exercise enhance mood and decrease stress. Poor nutrition can have a negative impact on our mood and certain nutrients can even boost mood. These are just a few examples.
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO MANTRA?
Don’t think; just do it! I’m an over-thinker so this is really necessary. When I say it to myself, I focus on my actions and turn the volume down on negative thoughts.
HOW DO YOU KICKSTART YOUR MOJO DURING THE COLDER MONTHS?
I adjust my exercise according to the weather. I exercise indoors when it’s really cold or go for a run in the sun. Rewards like a pedicure or massage also get me through. So do my training buddies!
