Not only is there no need to ‘quit’ carbs when you’re try­ing to lose weight, they can ac­tu­ally be ben­e­fi­cial for your weight loss – now that’s some­thing to cel­e­brate! A few dif­fer­ent stud­ies have made the link, in­clud­ing one re­leased last year which found car­bo­hy­drates are cru­cial for the pro­duc­tion of a hor­mone that’s linked to good health and a lower risk of obe­sity.

Plus, car­bo­hy­drates have a def­i­nite feel-good fac­tor. When you stop eat­ing them or don’t eat enough of them, your brain stops reg­u­lat­ing sero­tonin, a chem­i­cal that el­e­vates your mood and helps you reg­is­ter full­ness be­fore your stom­ach sends out phys­i­cal ‘I’m full’ sig­nals – which can help you avoid overeat­ing. The bot­tom line? You don’t need to ban carbs when you’re try­ing to lose weight, but it does pay to choose health­ier, lower-gly­caemic in­dex ones. An easy way to start do­ing that is by pick­ing whole­grain ce­re­als, such as oats, sweet potato rather than white potato and grainy in­stead of white bread.
