Bread for success

Weight Watchers Magazine (Australia) - - Cover Story -

Not only is there no need to ‘quit’ carbs when you’re trying to lose weight, they can actually be beneficial for your weight loss – now that’s something to celebrate! A few different studies have made the link, including one released last year which found carbohydrates are crucial for the production of a hormone that’s linked to good health and a lower risk of obesity.

Plus, carbohydrates have a definite feel-good factor. When you stop eating them or don’t eat enough of them, your brain stops regulating serotonin, a chemical that elevates your mood and helps you register fullness before your stomach sends out physical ‘I’m full’ signals – which can help you avoid overeating. The bottom line? You don’t need to ban carbs when you’re trying to lose weight, but it does pay to choose healthier, lower-glycaemic index ones. An easy way to start doing that is by picking wholegrain cereals, such as oats, sweet potato rather than white potato and grainy instead of white bread.
