Heading outside for a walk could be the perfect antidote to Christmas stress – and might mean you move for longer without noticing too, according to a new study. Austrian researchers found walking for three hours in the mountains was perceived to be more enjoyable and less strenuous than pounding a treadmill for the same time. ey divided 45 people into three groups – one who hiked for three hours, another who walked on a similar gradient on a treadmill and a third group who sat inside talking. e outdoor group reported more enjoyment, calmness and less fatigue than the treadmill group or the indoors chatting group.

Try this: Take advantage of the longer summer days to swap your treadmill session for a stroll on the beach or bushwalk – you may find that it’s less tiring than if you were at the gym, and enjoy it a lot more!
