Where to now for Subiaco markets?

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Quick News - By ROSANNA CANDLER

SUBIACO council will discuss potential locations and management of new markets to replace the soon-to-close Station Street Markets at a council meeting tonight.

Councillor Stephanie Stroud will present an elected members’ motion that staff prepare a preliminary report in the next two months, including possible future market locations, how the market would operate and whether the City could take on financial responsibility.

“It is quite a complex issue to assess the ramifications of the loss of the markets and their possible replacement, but an important place to start is through research,” Cr Stroud wrote.

“The City needs to take pre-emptive action.”

Subiaco Square Newsagency owner Dean Scott said the council had “been caught napping” and were now scrambling to catch up.

“The City of Subiaco has known for years and years that the Station Street Markets would be developed,” Mr Scott said.

“A replacement market site should already have been located, prepared and ready to go by this late stage.”
