Research reveals threat
NATIVE plant species Stirling Range wattles and Kambellup banksias are at risk of extinction, says University of WA researcher Christine Allen. Dr Allen said she spent the past four years working on her PhD to protect the species, which are on the Department of Parks and Wildlife’s list of thousands of threatened plants. She said her work was important to rescue the species and provide a blueprint for saving other plant species in the south-west, which was a “world biodiversity hotspot”. “If plants can be saved, then whole ecosystems involving native insects, birds and marsupials can also be protected,” she said.
