WATCHING Sam Groth play his first Davis Cup at the Cottesloe Tennis Club last weekend was a tournament highlight for Town of Cottesloe Mayor Jo Dawkins.

The club member said it was great to watch the rising star, along with Nick Kyrgios and Lleyton Hewitt.

Australia won its way back into the world group of the Davis Cup after just two days of matches.

Ranked sixth in Australia, Groth took 63 minutes to overcome Uzbekistan’s Temur Ismailor 6-3 62 in a dead rubber on Sunday.

Kyrgios took the court twice, beating world number 55 Denis Istomin 6-4 7-5 6-4 last Friday in the opening match.

The Canberra teenager then played world number 736 Sanjar Fayziev in a dead rubber on Sunday, winning 6-1 6-1 in 39 minutes.

Hewitt got Australia to a 2-0 lead on day one by beating Farrukh Dustov 6-4 6-4 6-2 and combined with Chris Guccione in the doubles on Saturday, defeating Istomin and Dustov 6-3 7-6(5) 6-2.

Mrs Dawkins said everything went to plan, including parking and transport, with the Town running its free Cott Cat buses between the train station and club over the three days.

Club president David Chadwick said the courts held up well and “played better and better every day”. More than 12,000 people attended games during the tournament.
