Council ‘no’ to developer

Western Suburbs Weekly - - News -

SUBIACO councillors last week rejected a controversial request from developer DevWest to add 0.5m height and remove reference to storeys in a scheme amendment that would allow them to redevelop 263277 Hay Street and 17-19 Olive Street.

TPG town planning, urban design and heritage principal Peter Simpson said in a statement that a limitation on storeys did not allow for design flexibility.

Mayor Heather Henderson said it would be irresponsible to change the scheme amendment at such a late stage.

“If we take out storeys and add to the height, then the amendment would need to go back to public consultation,” she said.

Cr Murray Rowe said bulk and scale should be the only development issues Council needed to address.

“We don’t want more red tape, we want more architectural flair,” he said.

The Scheme Amendment to Subiaco’s Town Planning Scheme 4 is expected to be adopted at the September 23 council meeting.
