Sweet success for baking queen

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Business - Rosanna Candler

AFTER baking all night for her new Wembley shop Sugarplum Sweets, Flavia Harris says just one compliment will give her a buzz that no amount of caffeine can imitate.

“When someone says, ‘Oh my god, that is the best thing I’ve ever tasted’, it instantly reminds me why I love baking so much,” Mrs Harris said.

“One of my clients even saves up part of her pension for half a dozen cupcakes as her special splurge every few months, which blew me away.”

Mrs Harris said she started Sugarplum Sweets creating custom dessert catering from her home kitchen about two and a half years ago.

However, it was not until opening “the prettiest booth” at the Perth Royal Show last year that her business really took off.

“I was working full time in real estate and by November it had exploded; I simply couldn’t keep up with the baking, emails, everything,” Mrs Harris said.

“In February, my husband and I realised I needed to get out, I needed a commercial kitchen.

“I love that my clients know every single thing is handmade right down to the lemon curd in our lemon meringues. Nothing comes from a packet, nothing comes out of a jar.”
