Coles crucial to site future
DEVELOPER Greg Pearce says he would have to reconsider developing the Station Street Markets site if Coles decided to stay at the Park Street Precinct.
Mr Pearce said Coles and Target had accepted and signed lease agreements but the offers were conditional on whether their boards granted approval this month.
He said he understood that a City of Subiaco councillor met with Coles last week to reopen land swap negotiations with the City and encourage them to stay at their current location.
“It is unusual as this dialogue is usually conducted by the chief executive,” he said.
“Coles and ourselves have been negotiating in good faith for a long time.
“Until I hear from Coles to the contrary, I will continue to believe this is the case.”
Cr Paul Clements, who did not meet with Coles, will present a motion at tonight’s council meeting that City staff entered into discussions with Coles to consolidate the City’s and Coles’ landholdings.
“The potential loss of Coles is likely to damage the shopping offer in the precinct and displace the markets,” his motion read.
“We need to discuss the matter with Coles and explore acceptable outcomes to both parties that could retain Coles in the current location.”
