Keep Markets in Subi

Western Suburbs Weekly - - News -

STATION Street Market stallholders would back the idea of relocating to the former Wembley Tafe premises at 133 Salvado Road, their spokesman says.

“I am extremely confident that the majority of stallholders would move,” stallholders’ committee spokesman Islam Bouyahia said at a Subiaco council meeting last week.

He said the City of Subiaco-owned building would be an ideal immediate short- term solution if the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority approved a commercial development application and the markets closed in December.

“We need the council to understand that (an alternative model) cannot take the form of a pop-up market one or two days a week,” Mr Bouyahia said.

“Personally, I believe that its size and industry of design would offer a fast and convenient solution. It could preserve our future in Subiaco.”

Councillor Stephanie Stroud said the former Tafe site had the requisite ventilation, electricity, plumbing and car parking spaces to be a suitable site.

The approved staff recommendation confirmed the need for a short-term temporary market site for early 2015.
