Chuck thrown into bigwa wine show

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Western Opinion -

AMERICAN wine buyer Chuck Hayward hopes to learn as well as judge when he visits Perth for the Qantas Wine Show WA next month.

The JJ Buckley senior brand manager buys the Australian and New Zealand wine for the California-based company.

“I have a fairly good understanding of Western Australia’s wine regions and what they communicate to grapes like riesling and chardonnay, shiraz and cabernet,” Mr Hayward said.

“Hopefully I can confirm some of my understanding about subregions in areas like Margaret River and Geographe while learning more about new, upcoming regions like Porongurups.”

Mr Hayward is the guest judge at this year’s awards and brings 30 years of experience with Australian wines.

“My first job as a retailer at The Jug Shop in San Francisco brought me in contact with the first wave of Australian wines to arrive into the US,” he said.

“My knowledge came about from a few factors: one was visiting winemakers who came to sell and educate us. At the time there was no education about Aussie wines, so we needed to pick the brains of visiting winemakers to learn more about the category.

“Travelling was essential to understand the lay of the land, how cool and warm climate regions differed, learn more about the country, its history and culture, etc.”

The Awards Dinner will be at the Hyatt on October 31.
