JAMES Fitzthum has been us­ing Ac­tiv’s respite ser­vices at the Va­ri­ety Pel­i­can Cen­tre for sev­eral years. For the 14-year-old’s grand­mother and pri­mary carer Shirley, WA’s big­gest non-for-profit dis­abil­ity ser­vice is in­valu­able. “It’s just me and James at home, and no kids around,” Ms Fitzthum said. “James needs that in­ter­ac­tion with other peo­ple his age and he gets that at dur­ing his time at Ac­tiv’s respite ser­vices. “I see the joy in James’s face when he goes to Ac­tiv. He is so happy and re­laxed, and as his grand­mother I find that just won­der­ful. “At 70 years of age, I need time my­self to recharge my bat­ter­ies. “It’s great know­ing that James is safe and re­ally en­joys his time at Ac­tiv Respite. “Words can’t de­scribe the pos­i­tive im­pact Ac­tiv has had on both our lives.” To high­light their im­por­tant work and to raise money for West Aus­tralians liv­ing with a dis­abil­ity like James, Ac­tiv has launched its 2014 Christ­mas Ap­peal.
