“I would also like lo­cal gov­ern­ment re­form com­pleted, but it’s a long way off be­ing a pri­or­ity for the gov­ern­ment.

“The most im­por­tant thing has been to cre­ate a true cap­i­tal city in­clud­ing the ma­jor in­sti­tu­tions of the state, the hos­pi­tals, QEII, Univer­sity of WA and Kings Park. That has been the driv­ing force from my per­spec­tive from day one.”

Mr Bar­nett said he was putting on the apron as kitchen hand to his wife Lynne on Christ­mas Eve.

“Christ­mas Eve is the one big time in the year that I catch up with my fam­ily with lots of nice food, lots of nice drinks and things,” he said.

As for his New Year’s res­o­lu­tion, Mr Bar­nett said he was de­ter­mined to fin­ish build­ing a stone bar­be­cue at his fam­ily farm.

“I made a bit of a mis­take be­cause it’s a bit over­sized, so it’s like I’m build­ing a gothic cathe­dral. I’ve started, I’ve done the foun­da­tions and that’s my ob­jec­tive, to fin­ish it prop­erly,” he said.
