Play puts spotlight on unique journey

HER own struggle with motherhood is part of what attracted Perth playwright Suzanne Ingelbrecht to The List, which she will direct at Perth’s Fringe World Festival in January.

Ingelbrecht heard about the play through the artistic director of a local theatre company while at Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

“She emailed a copy of it to me and I read it and was immediately captivated…the subject matter for me was personally enticing because it was about a woman who was struggling with motherhood and that’s something I’ve personally struggled with,” she said.

“So I immediately felt empathy for this very complex woman character and the play just captivated me and I thought, ‘oh golly, I would love to put this on’.”

Written by Canadian playwright Jennifer Tremblay, TheList follows a woman, played by actor Gemma Cavoli, as she interweaves the telling of how her friend Caroline died with the details of her ongoing list of things she must do for her home and family. “Jennifer Tremblay’s play has been beautifully structured,” Ingelbrecht said.

“It’s really so simple in form and character development that all we have to do is let the words sing for themselves.”

She said she was excited about being a part of Fringe World Festival and was clear about what she wanted audiences to take away.

“I want my audience to empathise with the woman they’re watching in front of them who moves through a whole range of different emotions,” she said.

“I want them to feel that complexity and to walk out of the theatre space thinking to themselves, ‘wow I’ve just watched a really fantastic performance and it’s got me thinking about life, family life, motherhood, friendship, the way that we neglect our friends’…just get people thinking.”
