Charges follow gate dam­age

A GIR­RAWHEEN man (37) charged with the theft of a Hyundai Santa Fe 4WD that crashed into gates at Su­bi­aco Oval will reap­pear in Perth Mag­is­trates Court to­day.

It will be al­leged the man was in the car with a fe­male driver when it hit the his­toric gates near the Hay Street /Haydn Bun­ton Drive in­ter­sec­tion about 1.30am last Sun­day.

The 4WD was be­ing pur­sued by po­lice when it was seen near Cogh­lan and Roberts roads in Su­bi­aco about 10 min­utes ear­lier

The man was ar­rested near the crash shortly after and was charged with hav­ing an out­stand­ing war­rant, car theft and un­law­ful pos­ses­sion of stolen goods.

The woman, whose iden­tity was known to po­lice, es­caped on foot and she was still be­ing sought yes­ter­day.

Ex­ten­sive dam­age to the gates’ lime­stone sup­ports was se­cured by SES per­son­nel but the oval-based WA Foot­ball Com­mis­sion was un­avail­able to com­ment on what would be done with the struc­ture.
