COMEDIAN RETURNS TO FRINGE
“I was involved in guest spots in Fringe last year and was so inspired that I was determined to have my own show this year,” Pondent said.
His style of delivering film reviews deadpan in a monotone voice has been entertaining fans of the Perth comedy scene for the last three years, although Pondent said he wished he had started making people laugh earlier. “It’s such a wonderful feeling,” he said. “Originally I was a one-liner comic, which I so badly wanted to be, but had mixed success.
“Then I got to the stage where I had a rethink of what I loved, because I think comedy should be all about what you love and what you know.
“I’m really passionate about movies and thought I’d just review films with a funny angle and it worked.”
Since then he has been a regular support act for comics but said any more than about 15 minutes of his deadpan delivery proved too much for his audience, and him.
Therefore, the one-hour Movie Night is a comedy and multimedia experience with additional music, slideshows and video tributes, including one for Heath Ledger and a Magic Mike re-enactment of the Pony dance routine, with a twist.
“I just want people to be entertained because sometimes in comedy, people get too caught up with trying to get their message out or make it in to an ego trip,” Pondent said.
“I like to think I have broad appeal and it’s not gender or age specific.”
Born in Mauritius, Pondent moved to Australia as an infant and is married with two children. He said he could not have pursued his comedy without the support of his wife, who last year watched her husband play to a crowd of 1500 during the Raw Comedy Final at His Majesty’s Theatre.
“The performance I did at the Raw Comedy Final was the best performance I’d ever done,” he said. “It was only five minutes, but I was so glad people got to see my style and it made me feel like I belonged in the comedy fraternity.”
